My New Workout

You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I love to exercise.  I like pushing myself, getting really tired, and feeling sore afterwards.  I love how my body feels after a tough workout.  My problem, however, is that I’m not a good self-motivator.  I need someone to tell me what to do and I need other people around me who are doing the same thing.  I need to feel like I have to keep going because it would be too humiliating to quit.

I was in pretty good shape when I got pregnant with Sam.  I was exercising at the gym for an hour most days of the week.  I was doing boxing fitness, spinning classes, and step-aerobics.  I loved it.  My doctor encouraged me to keep exercising while pregnant, but said not to get my heart rate up.  I asked for clarification, and she said I should walk or do yoga.  Well…that didn’t work for me.  I get bored walking and it was difficult to find a yoga class that worked for me.  I went to my spinning class but it didn’t feel like good exercise because I had to keep my heart rate under 140.  So I gave up.  On top of that, I ate too many pop tarts (they helped me avoid throwing up in the middle of my 8 am class).  So here I am.  Overweight and out of shape.

I’ve tried walking with the stroller every afternoon.  It gets boring.  I tried doing wii fitness every day.  Boring.  I tried using my stair stepper while watching TV.  Also boring, but a good way to calm Sam down when he gets fussy.  You can’t take a baby to spinning class, so I thought I was going to be stuck with chore-like workouts for the next year or so.  Then, last weekend, I did a quick search of Mommy and Me exercise classes and found that there is a stroller exercise class that meets at the top of the hill.  I’ve been twice now, and it is really fun!  We run or power-walk with the strollers, do zillions of lunges, and stop for strength training or cardio exercises.  The classes are great for moms because we sing songs to the kids to keep them entertained and the instructor calms down the fussy babies so that the moms can exercise.  After two days, I’m tired, I’m sore, and I’m really excited about it!  Sam is a champ in class.  He laughs at mommy doing silly exercises and naps a little in the stroller.  We’ve met some really nice people too!
